Scarab paper is the original handmade paper, using elephant dung that adds texture to recycled paper.
Scarab’s paper is handmade from recycled paper, incorporating sanitized fibre from the dung of elephants, rhino and other wild herbivores of Africa. The varied environments and diets of these animals make the texture of each sheet of paper unique.
In the 1980’s our wildlife artist experimented with handmade paper as a medium on which to paint. Adding chopped grasses, plant fibres and other natural materials to the pulp, she created paper with interesting and attractive textures. Here was a variety of plant fibres, naturally selected and chopped which, when cleaned and processed, resulted in the creation of this remarkable paper.
Today artists and papermakers worldwide have imitated this concept, but Scarab Paper is the original “dung thing” and remains the only company in Africa to print wildlife art on this beautiful paper on a commercial scale.
SCARAB PAPER is named after the SCARAB dung beetle.

Our handmade paper is crafted from recycled materials, including sanitized elephant dung fibres, making each sheet of paper unique in texture, colour, and thickness.
Yes, our handmade paper can be used in printers for printing designs, invitations and much more. However, because of the difference in texture and thickness between the individual sheets, the printing process is much more successful where the printer feeds the paper straight through the printer (ie from back to front) and does not bend the paper back over itself during the printing process.
